A Spoonie Summer: Heatwaves, Hummus, and Hiding Indoors
What a Dutch super heatwave looks like from inside a carefully sealed flat
I’ve been thinking about Miss Scholten.
You probably don’t know her (unless you’re Dutch), but what happened to her is honestly quite tragic.
She melted.
On Dam Square.

It was in all the papers. The heat, you know…
37°C
I think I know exactly what she must have felt like, as she slowly melted into a puddle, because as I’m writing this, it’s 37 centigrade outside. (And you can bet your arse that I’m not going anywhere near Dam Square.)
But as my friend Mireille van Driel said:
Where most of my healthy, able-bodied fellow Dutch citizens are warming up for our first-ever super heatwave, I’m looking at my weather app willing it to reverse this meteorological disaster.
But it won’t budge. Keeps showing me those Numbers of Doom.
Oh, I’m not complaining. Yet.
Temperatures in my living room are still at a comfortable 24 centigrade. I can still focus on my writing. But since it’s only June, I can’t help but wonder: how will the flat behave once summer is in full swing?
I guess time will tell.

New Hummus Recipe
If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know that I love hummus. And since hummus is perfect for summer, I decided to share another of my favourite hummus recipes on my blog: Easy Sun-Dried Tomato Hummus.
Because every Spoonie deserves to eat well. Even on mind-meltingly hot summer days.

I feel exactly the same dread when those “numbers of doom” start to rise. Currently experiencing a heatwave here in the UK too and MS heat intolerance is giving me a good kicking.
Thanks for the houmous recipe, I love that you have us using shop bought as a base if things are a bit too much! 😊
Hey Daan, Thank you for the honor of citing my note here.
I applaud you to keep your flat so cool. With screens and airco I can barely keep it at 25,5 degrees Celsius. Love how you described it and despite being a fellow-sufferer you made me smile 😀
Tomorrow will be murder, also on asthmatic people with high humidity and low air quality, so please take care.
Summer has just started. Yay…
